Five University of Alabama fraternity members reportedly were arrested Wednesday on charges of hazing.
AL.com reports Colter K. Anderson, 21, John Patrick Buckley, 21, Hunter Lee Wagner, 20, Richard E. Markwalter 20, and Mark Allen Powers, 20, were among the Phi Gamma Delta members who made pledges stand in buckets of ice and salt several weeks ago. The combination led to burns on the pledges’ feet.
Powers faces one hazing charge and each of the others face three counts of hazing. They were all booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail with bond set at $1,000. University spokesman Chris Bryant told AL.com the arrest followed a joint investigation by the University of Alabama Police Department and the UA Office of Student Conduct.
Bryant said the students have also been placed on interim sanctions and are being referred to the Office of Student Conduct.
"The University of Alabama will not tolerate hazing and takes allegations and incidents of hazing very seriously,'' Dean of Students Tim Hebson said in a statement. "Students who are the victims of, or who become aware of, hazing incidents are strongly encouraged to bring these incidents to our attention."
The University of Alabama and the Phi Gamma Delta International Fraternity hit the chapter with sanctions, which include no social gatherings and no new member activities.
Phi Gamma Delta was previously reprimanded by the University of Alabama in 2012. The fraternity was among others that were accused of hazing. However, they were cleared of any wrongdoing, according to AL.com.
