A veteran sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed in the Florida Panhandle had recently come out of retirement to earn extra money for a family trip to Disney World.

Authorities say 64-year-old Bill Myers died Tuesday after being shot multiple times in the head and back. Myers was attempting to serve a domestic violence restraining order at the time.

Authorities say the shooter, 33-year-old Joel Dixon Smith, fled and barricaded himself in a nearby hotel room where he was later killed in a confrontation with police.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley says his department is mourning and that Myers, a 25-year-veteran deputy, was like a family member to many in the sheriff's office. Ashely says Myers loved spending time with his family and visiting Disney World.
