Authorities say four people were killed and one person was seriously injured after a two-car accident in south Florida.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mike Wysocky tells The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1Qnmy6C ) the head-on collision happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on northbound U.S. 27 in Weston.

Wysocky says three of the victims were inside an overturned SUV or van, and the fourth was in a car.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the accident.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles says a 69-year-old man at the scene had internal injuries but was conscious and alert when he was airlifted to a hospital.

Authorities said all lanes of U.S. 27 northbound would be closed for hours.

Weston is about 30 miles west of Fort Lauderdale.
