WASHINGTON – A government survey shows most states have truck parking shortages every day and at all times of the day. They also don't provide enough information to truckers on where they can park safely.
Almost half of the state transportation departments surveyed by the Federal Highway Administration said truckers are forced to park in unsafe places like freeway interchange ramps, shoulders of highways and vacant lots. Officials said they are also concerned that tired truck drivers might continue to drive because they have difficulty finding a place to park for rest.
States that did not report shortages were mostly rural.
Also, more than 75 percent of truck drivers reported regularly experiencing problems with finding safe parking when rest was needed.
The survey, released Friday, was required by 2012 transportation law.
