A former Fairfax County police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man as he stood just inside his front door has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge, authorities say.
A special grand jury convened by the commonwealth's attorney returned the indictment Monday against Adam Torres in the shooting death of 46-year-old John Geer of Springfield, northern Virginia.
Torres fatally shot Geer in August 2013 after a report of a domestic dispute. Witnesses, including other officers, said Geer was unarmed and had his hands up when he was shot.
Michael Lieberman, an attorney for Geer's family, said he considered the charge appropriate for what he called an intentional shooting.
Police said Aug. 7 that Torres no longer works for the department. A phone number couldn't be found for him.
