A 91-year-old military veteran in western Ohio has been awarded France's highest civilian honor for his service during World War II.
The Springfield News-Sun (http://bit.ly/1f7mE4I ) reports Clarence Devore Jr. was presented with his Legion of Honor medal Tuesday. About 93,000 people have received that honor over more than two centuries.
The former U.S. Army rifleman says he was shot in the arm while serving in France and stuck in the hospital while the Germans were fighting the Battle of the Bulge.
Even wounded, he says he tried to keep his sense of humor. He says he figured he couldn't work a rifle, so he asked for a pistol, but no one went along with his request.
He now lives at the Springfield Masonic Community, about 50 miles west of Columbus.
