NEW YORK – Authorities say officials at a New York City jail have uncovered an apparent escape plot while sweeping the facility after learning of drug smuggling there.
New York City Department of Investigation Commissioner Mark Peters said Thursday that an inmate had neatly tied together 64 bedsheets and stashed them under the sink in his cell.
In the other case, authorities say a correction officer and a different inmate were arrested in a conspiracy to smuggle drugs, cellphones, pliers and other items into the Manhattan Detention Center.
Peters and District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. say the officer worked in the detention center's mailroom.
The discovery of the plot comes less than two weeks after two convicted murderers escaped from a maximum-security prison in upstate New York.
