Many state and federal law enforcement officers are conducting a ground and aerial search in a rural area 30 miles southeast of the northern New York prison where two murderers escaped.

Willsboro Town Supervisor Shaun Gilliland says residents reported seeing a couple of men walking in the town Monday night during a driving rainstorm. He said the men headed off into farm fields and the residents called police, who reacted immediately.

Gilliland says police haven't confirmed that the men are David Sweat and Richard Matt, who escaped from the maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora Friday night or early Saturday.

He says the state Department of Corrections, state police, U.S. Marshal's Office and Essex County Sheriff's Office are involved in the search and a helicopter is overhead.
