The father of a woman who was shot and critically wounded by a suburban-Atlanta sheriff says his daughter told police the shooting was an accident.
Ernest McCord told The Associated Press on Friday that his daughter, 43-year-old Gwenevere McCord, was able to speak Thursday for the first time since the May 3 shooting. Doctors removed a tube from her throat.
Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill told a 911 operator after the shooting that it was an accident. He has been charged with reckless conduct.
The woman is a real estate agent. She and the sheriff were in an empty model home when the shooting occurred.
Ernest McCord said the sheriff was teaching his daughter to defend herself when a gun went off. He said she is frequently alone in homes.
