RENO, Nev. – A female trespasser who survived a shooting in a vacant Nevada duplex says the property owner was unprovoked when he opened fire, wounding her three times and killing a man on the floor next to her.
Janai Wilson testified Wednesday in Washoe County District Court in Reno as prosecutors prepared to rest their case in the trial of Wayne Burgarello on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Wilson broke into tears as she recalled hearing at least six gunshots.
She says she stopped counting shots as she huddled beneath a comforter, fearing the shooter would kill her, too.
Burgarello, a 74-year-old retired schoolteacher, has said he fired in self-defense when he killed 34-year-old Cody Devine and seriously wounded Wilson in February 2014.
The trial is expected to continue through the end of the week.
