Son of ex-Honduran president jailed in US on drug trafficking charges

NEW YORK – The son of former Honduran President Porfirio Lobo has been ordered held without bail on U.S. drug trafficking charges.

Fabio Lobo Lobo appeared Friday in federal court in New York City. An indictment accused him of participating in drug conspiracy that began in 2009.

The 43-year-old son was arrested Wednesday in Haiti in an anti-drug operation carried out by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Haitian authorities. There was no immediate response to messages left Friday with his defense lawyer.

The elder Lobo served as Honduras' president from 2010 to 2014. He was elected following a coup that removed Manuel Zelaya from the presidency in 2009.
