MURPHY, N.C. – The U.S. Marshals Service says a man who once fired a rifle at a federal agent during the search for the serial bomber who targeted the 1996 Olympics is in custody following a standoff in North Carolina.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/1FgIM6U) 48-year-old Wayne Henry Burchfield is in the Cherokee County jail.
Spokesman Robert Spangler said Murphy police responded to a call of a man chasing a woman with a machete. Spangler said Burchfield made several threats toward law enforcement before barricading himself inside a house Tuesday night. He came out after several hours of negotiations and a brief struggle with officers.
Burchfield was convicted of firing an assault rifle in 1998 into the task force command post heading the manhunt for convicted serial bomber Eric Rudolph. One shot grazed the head of an FBI agent.
