NEWARK, N.J. – One person was killed and at least three others were injured Sunday after a shooting during a motorcycle event in Newark.
The shooting happened in the city's South Ward after the scheduled conclusion of the Blessing of the Bikes, an event held each Mother's Day by the Newark Knights motorcycle club to mark the beginning of the riding season.
Thomas S. Fennelly, a chief assistant prosecutor with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, told NJ.com the shooting took place at around 7:45 p.m. local time. The blessing was scheduled to end at 6 p.m.
Fennelly said the shooting took place at an intersection near the bike club's headquarters. No further details of the shooting or its relation to the Blessing of the Bikes were immediately available.
The injured victims were being treated at local hospitals for non life-threatening injuries, Fennelly said.
