Some events leading to the indictment of an Ohio man on charges he trained with terrorists as part of a plot to return to the U.S. to kill Americans, according to court documents.
— March 1, 1987: Abdifatah Aden born in Somalia.
— Sept. 1, 1991: Aden's brother, Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, born in Somalia.
— Jan. 18, 2006, Aden, having emigrated to the U.S. as a child, becomes a citizen.
— May 14, 2013: Abdifatah Aden leaves the U.S. for Saudi Arabia, where he finalizes his decision to fight with a terrorist group in Syria.
— September 2013: Mohamud sends Aden a Facebook message supporting his brother and his religious war companions.
— Feb. 14, 2014: Mohamud sends Aden a Facebook message asking how he can send him money.
— Feb. 18, 2014: Mohamud becomes a U.S. citizen.
— Feb. 20, 2014: Aden sends Mohamud a Facebook message instructing him to call an "unnamed associate" to collect $1,000 promised to Aden. The same day, during an interview with the FBI, Mohamud identifies himself as his brother, then admits his identity when challenged.
— Feb. 26, 2014: Mohamud tells his brother via Facebook he was questioned by the FBI and is being "very careful now."
— March 7-April 15, 2014: Facebook messages reveal Mohamud and Aden discussing the transfer of the $1,000.
— April 16, 2014: Facebook records reveal Mohamud told Aden he bought a computer tablet to use to raise money for Aden's fighting.
— April 18, 2014: Mohamud leaves the U.S. and arrives in Turkey the following day. He does not board his connecting flight to Greece.
— April 2014 (unspecified dates): Mohamud receives terrorist training in Syria.
— May 13, 2014: Aden tells an unidentified Facebook user he is with Al-Nusrah Front, a State Department-designated foreign terrorist organization.
— June 3, 2014: Aden killed in battle in Syria.
— June 4-5, 2014: Mohamud takes actions to have Aden's martyrdom photo and his brother's entire Facebook page deleted.
— June 8, 2014: Mohamud returns to the United States.
— June 9 and June 13, 2014: FBI interviews Mohamud and his sister about Aden.
— Sept. 5, 2014: Mohamud takes three associates to a Columbus-area shooting range to teach them target shooting. Only two are allowed to shoot as the third was underage.
— Oct. 8, 2014: Facebook tells the FBI that Mohamud most likely deleted all the private messages he'd exchanged with his brother.
— Feb. 23, 2015: Mohamud indicted on state terrorism and money laundering charges.
— April 16, 2015: Mohamud indicted on federal charges of supporting terrorism, supporting a terrorist group and making a false statement involving international terrorism.
— April 17, 2015: Mohamud pleads not guilty to all charges.
