Activist leaders in North Charleston want a new prosecutor to handle the case of a white police officer charged with murder in the shooting death of a black man.
James Johnson of the National Action Network and Thomas Dixon of People United Take Back Our Community held a news conference Thursday outside the Charleston County Courthouse.
They want Solicitor Scarlett Wilson to step down as the prosecutor trying Michael Slager. Slager is charged with murder in a case in which Walter Scott was shot in the back in a slaying captured on cellphone video.
The leaders say Wilson is too close to the North Charleston Police Department, and they don't think there will be a fair trial. The AP left a message with Wilson seeking comment.
