Chicago police have shot and killed a man in the city's South Shore neighborhood after officers said he pointed a gun at them.

The Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs said in a statement early Saturday that officers heard shots fired at about 10:10 p.m. Friday and saw a van driving away. A male passenger jumped out of the van and began running.

The statement says the man, whose identity and age were not released, pointed a gun at the officers. One officer shot and killed the man.

Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene and no officers were injured.

The shooting is under investigation. The Independent Police Review Authority could not be reached early Saturday morning.
