The carcass of a 50-foot sperm whale has washed ashore at a beach just south of San Francisco.
Biologists and veterinarians arrived to the beach in Pacifica to examine the decomposing remains, believed to be an emaciated adult male, early Wednesday.
Officials from the nearby Marine Mammal Center say it's not immediately clear how the animal died or what would be done with it.
The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1EFfVth ) the carcass was first spotted in the waves Tuesday.
In January, a rare pygmy sperm whale died after beaching itself in Point Reyes. Investigators in that case said the whale had likely gotten sick and was too weak to swim.
