A prosecutor says the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will look into the fatal shooting of a man police say was driving toward officers in a Maserati outside the store where he worked.

Officials have said Smyrna police Sgt. Kenneth Owens shot 23-year-old Nicholas Taft Thomas on March 25 while officers were trying to serve him a warrant at a Goodyear store.

Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds said Thursday that he and Cobb County police Chief John Houser decided to ask the GBI to investigate. Reynolds said the request was made "in the spirit of transparency and openness."

Smyrna police had previously said Cobb County police would investigate the shooting because it happened in their jurisdiction. But Cobb County officers were on the scene as backup when the shooting happened, and Thomas' family had called for a GBI investigation.
