Eight members of a Fort Pierce, Florida, church died early Monday when their van drove into a ditch west of Lake Okeechobee. Fatal church van crashes happen several times a year in the U.S. Here are some that have happened since 2010:
— Feb. 21, 2014: The driver of a Florida Seventh-day Adventist church van and another adult die when a tire blows and the van flips during a trip to a Georgia youth camp. Eight people are injured.
— Feb. 16, 2014: A passenger in a nondenominational church van from a Utah Army base dies when it clips a SUV while changing lanes, causing it to cross the highway and into the path of a car. The car's driver and passenger also die.
— Sept. 14, 2013: Three passengers are killed and 13 injured when a Seventh-day Adventist church van's tire blew, causing it to flip on a Southwest Florida highway.
— July 27, 2013: The youth pastor of an Indianapolis Baptist church, his wife and another member die when the driver says the brakes failed and the van hit a median and overturned.
— May 20, 2013: Five members of a Baltimore Victory Outreach church die in Illinois when their van careens off a highway as they drive back from a California conference. The driver had a suspended license.
— Nov. 14, 2012: Three people onboard a Lighthouse of Jesus Christ church van die in a five-vehicle crash on a South Carolina highway. One other person also died.
— Feb. 26, 2012: An 18-year-old high school student dies when an overcrowded church van overturns after a tire blew out.
— June 22, 2011: Five members of a Baptist church in Louisiana die when their van overturns on a highway.
— June 20, 2011: The driver of a North Carolina Baptist church van dies when he drove into two utility poles. The 13 children onboard suffered minor injuries.
— Oct. 3, 2010: Four members of Georgia's Tabernacle of Prayer and Deliverance die when their van flips over on a highway.
— Sept. 18, 2010: Six members of the Joy Fellowship Christian Assemblies in New York City die and eight are injured when their van flips on a highway following a blown tire. The van's driver had a revoked license.
