SAN JOSE, Calif. – Authorities say the man who shot and killed a Northern California police officer checking on him after he threatened to commit suicide died when another lawman fired back.
Assistant Police Chief Eddie Garcia tells the San Jose Mercury News in a story Thursday (http://bayareane.ws/1IDzilP ) that 57-year-old Scott Dunham was shot through an opening in his enclosed, second-floor balcony seconds after gunning down San Jose Officer Michael Johnson.
The development ended speculation about whether Dunham killed himself. Emergency calls show police went to Dunham's apartment after he reportedly threatened his wife and said he would kill her if "she didn't leave."
Meanwhile, two vigils for Johnson are set for Friday, one at 6:30 p.m. at the site of the shooting and another at 8 p.m. at San Jose City Hall.
