A Montana man attending a precious-metals show in northern Idaho says someone broke into his vehicle and stole $60,000 worth of gold.

Ralph Smith of Ronan, Montana, tells the Coeur d'Alene Press newspaper (http://bit.ly/1EEmOXi ) that the theft occurred Saturday following the Northwest Gold Prospectors Association's 16th annual Gold and Treasure Show.

Smith says he went to a restaurant after the show, and when he returned to his vehicle, he discovered the gold was gone.

Association founder Bob Lowe says the suspect must have been watching Smith. Lowe says the show has never seen a theft this large.

The association is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the gold's recovery.

Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Christie Wood says investigators have the name of a possible suspect.
