A Florida high school teacher was handed a five-day, unpaid suspension Tuesday for allegedly calling a Muslim student "Taliban" multiple times, The Sun-Sentinel reported.
The Cyprus Bay High School French teacher, Maria Valdes, who did not respond to questions from the paper, will reportedly have to undergo diversity training.
The school's superintendent apologized to the family. But the ruling did not sit well with those who feel the teacher is getting off easy.
The father of the student, identified in the report as a ninth-grader, Deyab-Houssein Wardani, said he was unhappy with the light disciplinary action. The paper, citing the father, reported that the teacher referred to the teen as "the rag-head Taliban."
"I'll keep sitting in their face until they recognize what they've done," Yousseff Wardani, the father, told the paper. He may seek legal action against the district.
