WASHINGTON – It will soon be legal to grow small amounts of marijuana at home and smoke it on private property in the nation's capital. But it can't be sold, and the District of Columbia will not tax it.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the city's plans Tuesday to move forward with the voter-approved marijuana initiative, despite an attempt by Congress in December to block it. City officials believe they have the legal authority to move forward with the initiative because it was enacted before Congress tried to intervene.
Adults will also be able to share the drug with others. But it can't be consumed on public property.
The mayor's announcement comes the same day similar rules take effect in Alaska. It can't be sold there yet, but it can be grown and used privately.
