ATLANTA – Six months after a trial began, prosecutors have rested their case against educators accused of cheating on standardized tests in the Atlanta Public Schools.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1z7Loh6) that the milestone came Wednesday morning. The trial began with jury selection Aug. 11.
Jurors were dismissed until Wednesday afternoon so attorneys could argue motions seeking to dismiss some charges on the basis that prosecutors didn't prove their case.
Thirty-five former Atlanta Public Schools educators have been indicted in the cheating conspiracy. A dozen of them are on trial and plea deals have been reached with the others.
If Judge Jerry Baxter rejects requests to dismiss charges, defense attorneys are expected to begin calling witnesses and the trial could continue several more weeks.
