Canadian police: No national security threat in weapons discovery at Detroit-Windsor tunnel

Police in Windsor, Ontario, say two Michigan men accused of bringing illegal weapons into Canada from Detroit didn't pose a national security threat.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel under the Detroit River was closed for three hours Tuesday after police found a bag with a commercial-grade smoke bomb, two knives and a set of brass knuckles.

Sgt. Matt D'Asti says 29-year-old Kyle Martens of Clarkston and 18-year-old Ernest Edwards of Alba were on their way to see a friend. He says they're "just two guys" who crossed the border.

Martens and Edwards appeared in court Wednesday and were due in court again Thursday, but the sergeant said he didn't know the outcome.

D'Asti says the men face prohibited weapons charges for the knives and brass knuckles but not for the smoke bomb.
