Many students at Kingsley Elementary School in a low-income Los Angeles neighborhood eat breakfast and lunch provided by the school.
Another meal is being served for nearly 100 students who are enrolled in an after-school program: supper.
The nation's second-largest school district is doubling the number of students served dinner. It hopes to eventually offer dinner at every school.
Nationwide, the number of students who are served dinner or an after-school snack soared to nearly 1 million last year.
The school supper trend is expanding to meet the needs of low-income families and those with increasingly busy schedules. Some 104 million suppers were served last fiscal year.
The introduction of school dinner is unique in that it could replace what many consider a near-sacred ritual: The family dinner.
