A Virginia woman claims she was fired this week from the church day care center where she had been working for refusing to say when she would marry her fiancé.

Apryl Kellam said her supervisor at the Staples Mill Road Baptist Church in Henrico County had been warning her since October that she needed to marry her fiancé, James Coalson, according to WTVR. The couple is expecting a baby in April and has children from prior marriages.

Kellam said she was told to at least announce a wedding day this week – but was canned on Monday.

“I want to wait so we can have all our family and friends there and have a big wedding,” Kellam told WTVR. “I just don’t want to go to the courthouse and have someone marry us.”

Church Pastor James Booth said all workers at the start of employment are required to sign an employee handbook that outlines the church’s moral code of conduct.

Booth said he could not go into Kellam’s case further – citing confidentiality laws – but added that the church policy does not discriminate against unwed mothers or single women.

“We’re not trying to be hurtful, we’re just following our personnel handbook, which is rooted in our statement of faith and our biblical beliefs,” Booth said.

The couple is considering legal action and Kellam said she never received or signed the employee handbook.
