A gunman was in custody Wednesday after a shooting at a Louisiana mall left one person dead, police said.

The Christmas Eve attack at Oakwood Center Mall in Gretna, Louisiana, occurred around 4:20 p.m. after a man purchased something at a Foot Locker shoe store, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said. After the victim turned from the cash register, a man walked to within three or four feet of him and began shooting.

At least three shots were fired, Normand said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured.

Normand says the shooter was apprehended several blocks from the mall and is being questioned by authorities. Charges have not yet been filed, and a motive was not immediately clear.

Dozens of police, including Louisiana State Police, were at the mall Wednesday afternoon, which is located just southeast of New Orleans. Shoppers were ushered out of the mall soon after the shooting.
