Organizers: Visit from Pope Francis could be a rebirth for Philadelphia archdiocese

PHILADELPHIA – Roman Catholic officials in Philadelphia say hosting Pope Francis during his U.S. visit next year could foster a rebirth for an archdiocese that has struggled with financial problems and sex abuse scandals during the last decade.

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput (SHAP'-yoo) said Monday the pope's trip to the 2015 World Meeting of Families could lead to a "rebirth of the diocese," and that he's "grateful for the opportunity."

The archdiocese has been dogged by scandals including one involving the first U.S. church official charged with mishandling abuse complaints against clergy.

The pope plans to lead an outdoor Mass during his Philadelphia visit. Officials predict that 2 million people could attend it.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 22 to Sept. 27.
