A Denver-area police officer was shot and wounded during a traffic stop Friday night in the city of Aurora, police say.

Two officers made the stop about 9 p.m. and someone fired shot from inside the car. The bullets wounded one officer. The second officer returned fire, Aurora police spokesman Frank Fania said, but he was unsure if anyone was hit.

The suspect abandoned the car a few blocks away, which had been stolen.

The wounded officer underwent surgery early Saturday, but no details of the officer's condition were released.

A manhunt for the suspect came to a close at 1:45 a.m. local time, but officers were still scouting the area witnesses

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, the Denver Post reported. However, there was no word on the officer’s condition.
