An incumbent candidate who tied for the final open board seat in a small western Michigan school district has won a drawing for the six-year position.

The Grand Rapids Press reports (http://bit.ly/1x2w8Ei ) that Robert Baker Jr. pulled a slip of paper with "Elected" written on it Friday. That means he will remain on the seven-member Godfrey-Lee School Board.

Baker and Josephine Coleman tied with 296 votes. They were among six candidates seeking three seats on the board in the Nov. 4 election.

Coleman wanted to concede, but state law requires the legal winner in a tie be determined through steps that started with the election certification and ended with the drawing.

Incumbent Tammy Schafer and David Blok won the other seats. The district is in Wyoming, southwest of Grand Rapids.
