Lawyers for dozens of Latinos say that cash in their clients' possession turned up missing during arrests by the sheriff's office in metro Phoenix.
The attorneys say the allegations come from U.S. citizens but are more common among immigrants who are in the country illegally.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office says the complaints are unsubstantiated and criticized the lawyers for not reporting their grievances.
The allegations are emerging as the agency investigates whether former Deputy Ramon Charley Armendariz was shaking down immigrants.
Armendariz was arrested in May after bags of evidence and items belonging to others were found at his home.
Officials say Armendariz was found dead a week after his arrest in a suicide by hanging. A hearing is scheduled Tuesday for attorneys to discuss the Armendariz investigation.
