Federal authorities say an Austrian man wanted in the killing of his mother has been detained near a hostel in Portland, Oregon.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said Friday that prosecutors in Austria allege the man stabbed his mother 30 times in the neck at their apartment in August or early September.

He was identified as 22-year-old Stefan Eduard Wiebogen of Strasshof.

The agency said he was admitted to the U.S. under a visa waiver program after he arrived at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Sept. 8. It said a tip led investigators Thursday to the hostel where he was staying.

The agency said he's been taken to the federal detention center in Tacoma, Washington, while extradition proceedings get underway.
