YORK, Pa. – Digging at the site of a prison camp for British soldiers in the American Revolution is underway in south-central Pennsylvania.
The York Daily Record/Sunday News (http://bit.ly/1AOvmet ) reports that work began Monday at the site of Camp Security. It's the latest effort in a campaign to preserve and better understand the 18th-century site outside York.
An organizer tells the newspaper the work will concentrate on a four-acre area that's been plowed.
Volunteers are starting by looking for objects on the freshly disturbed surface.
The newspaper says about 100 holes will be dug over the coming month. More than 75 volunteers are signed up to work in four-hour shifts.
The camp began housing British POWs in 1781, including prisoners from the battles of Saratoga, New York, and Yorktown, Virginia.
