A fire underneath a New Jersey bridge is sending smoke billowing up and along a portion of the Pulaski Skyway.

The fire is located on the base of a bridge support for the span that connects Newark and Jersey City. Flames are engulfing wooden supports that provide a buffer around the base.

Several firefighting boats are on the scene.

The Pulaski Skyway is under construction for most of the next two years as the roadway deck is replaced and the span is refurbished. It's unclear if the fire has anything to do with construction currently underway.

The 3.5-mile steel truss bridge opened in 1932. It was featured in Orson Welles' 1938 "War of the Worlds" broadcast and in the opening credits of the television series "The Sopranos."
