Authorities say 18-year-old Michigan woman made false abduction claim

Authorities in southeastern Michigan said Sunday that an 18-year-old woman falsely claimed that she was abducted and held hostage for 16 hours earlier this week.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office released a statement after Hayley Turner was interviewed for a second time by a detective and an FBI agent.

"As a result of that interview," the statement said, "it was determined that the incident did not take place, as originally reported."

Turner told authorities that she was kidnapped at gunpoint while on her way to a video store late Thursday in Bedford Township, just north of the state border with Ohio. She said that she had seen a man in a ditch and had pulled her car over to check on him.

Turner's reported abduction spurred a search that involved local, state, and federal agencies and included a helicopter. Turner was found Friday morning in the nearby town of Ecorse after reportedly jumping from a slow-moving vehicle.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said it is closing the investigation and will refer the matter to the county prosecutor for review.
