Southeastern Michigan authorities are investigating the possible abduction of an 18-year-old woman who reported stopping to check on a person lying in a roadside ditch.

Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone told a news conference Friday that an air and ground search is taking place.

Malone says the woman was on the phone with a friend about 10 p.m. Thursday when she stopped at an intersection in Bedford Township, about 50 miles southwest of Detroit and near the Ohio border.

Malone says the woman told her friend that a man she didn't know had a gun and was following her, and they were disconnected seconds later. The woman's father was called and he found her unoccupied and idling vehicle minutes later.

The woman's family is appealing for her return.
