Police say a 16-year-old girl has been killed and another 16-year-old girl seriously injured Wednesday when they were struck by the propeller of a boat towing them in Long Island Sound near Greenwich.
The two girls were reportedly tubing behind the motor boat when the tow rope became ensnared in a propeller, pulling the girls into the spinning blades. Greenwich police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said two other girls were operating the boat at the time of the incident.
"It was a horrible accident," one law-enforcement source told The New York Post. "If more care was taken, it would never have happened."
The girl killed in the incident was identified as Emily Fedorko, The Connecticut Post reported. Fedorko, a gymnast and honor student, was to be a junior at Greenwich High School, the report said.
Gray said the girl died at the scene off Greenwich Point Park. The other girl had a soft tissue leg injury that he said "required extensive sticking." She is expected to recover.
He said it appears to have been "a tragic accident." Authorities are still investigating.
Greenwich Schools Superintendent William McKersie said the girl who died would have been a junior at Greenwich High School. He said counselors will be available for the school communities.
