Sheriff's officials say the man suspected of killing his wife and two young daughters at their Northern California home last year died of a single gunshot wound to his head that was likely self-inflicted.

Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey released 46-year-old Shane Miller's cause of death on Tuesday. Authorities determined over the weekend that skeletal remains discovered on the banks of a river in Humboldt belonged to Miller.

Miller was suspected of shooting his 34-year-old wife and the couple's 8 and 5-year-old daughters at their home on May 7, 2013.

Miller's remains were found about 200 miles away from his home, near an area where he grew up.

Downey said the cause of death was determined after an examination of the remains by an anthropologist and the coroner's office.
