A first-grader was reportedly forced to sit on the floor of her Texas classroom for several weeks as punishment for drawing on a desk.

The girl, a student at Westwood Elementary in Houston, was scolded by her teacher after drawing a picture on her desk, according to KHOU.com. The girl's identity has not been made public at her family's request.

The child's mother told the website that she received an email from her daughter's teacher about the incident, but was unaware that she'd been forced to sit on the floor.

"She lost her recess ... She went to the principal's office and then she had to wash the desk and that was it," she told the site. "I was never told that her desk was removed."

The girl reportedly sat on the floor for more than four weeks until she finally told her parents.

"I asked her, 'Why did you not tell me?' And she said, 'I was too scared to tell you mama,'" the mother said. "She thought what she had done was so bad she didn't deserve to have a desk."

The school district told the website that the teacher was reprimanded for her conduct. They also released the following statement, saying, "The family has been offered multiple opportunities to transfer their child, either to another teacher within the school or to any elementary school in the district where enrollment is not capped."
