DOVER, Del. – Delaware officials say the federal government should provide more information about 117 immigrant children placed with Delaware families and should reimburse state agencies and nonprofits for providing services.
The News Journal reports federal officials have not disclosed the location or identities of the children who immigrated alone to the U.S. That makes it more difficult for state officials to coordinate services such as education and health care.
Gov. Jack Markell says he learned on a White House conference call last Tuesday that the children had been placed with Delaware families. The children are among thousands from Central America who were caught migrating alone across the U.S. border. Markell says most of the children are staying with their own relatives.
Sen. Chris Coons says Delaware should be given more information.
