SANTA ANA, Calif. – Surveillance video from a private residence shows Southern California police officers punching a suspect and hitting him in the legs with a baton.
The Orange County Register reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/1rngr5q) that 27-year-old Edgar Vargas Arzate fled from Santa Ana officers responding to a burglary call.
Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says the June 20 incident is being investigated.
The police spokesman says officers knew of the tape that night but couldn't get a copy for several weeks.
Arzate isn't visible on screen for most of the one-minute clip.
One officer appears to punch him six times. Another officer swings a baton at his legs.
Arzate, who was hospitalized, was charged with attempted burglary, battery of a police officer, resisting arrest and tampering with a vehicle.
