Senate backs Gen. Dunford to command Marine Corps, new commander for Afghanistan

The Senate has approved a new commander for the Marine Corps and a new leader in Afghanistan.

By voice vote this week, the Senate approved President Barack Obama's nomination of Gen. Joseph Dunford to be commandant of the Marine Corps. Dunford succeeds Gen. James Amos.

The Senate also endorsed the nomination of Army Gen. John Campbell to be commander of the International Security Assistance Force and American forces in Afghanistan. Campbell will replace Dunford.

In further changes in the military, the Senate agreed that Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Votel should serve as commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, replacing Navy Adm. William McRaven.
