Md. woman known for donating wedding gowns gets 4 years for stealing $5M from nonprofit

A woman known for donating gowns from her Maryland bridal shop to military brides has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for stealing more than $5 million from her nonprofit employer.

Forty-four-year-old Ephonia Green of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was also ordered to pay restitution at her sentencing Friday in U.S. District Court in Washington.

Prosecutors say Green embezzled the money while she worked at the Association of American Medical Colleges, which administers the admissions test used by medical schools.

Court documents say Green opened bank accounts in names that closely resembled legitimate vendors.

The Washington Post reports that Green cried as she apologized in court, saying she had "heartbreak every day" over the theft.
