A 101-year-old veteran in Carson City who was the victim of a home invasion robbery over the Memorial Day weekend has received a $1,000 check during a surprise visit from supporters.

Members of Western Nevada College's Student Veterans Club presented the check to James Sorrentino on Friday.

Organizer Bill Herron says the group wanted Sorrentino to know the community is behind him and people aren't all bad.

Sorrentino thanked the group, saying the check was a surprise and shows "patriotism is still alive" in America.

Authorities say two men forced their way into Sorrentino's home looking for a safe on May 25, but Sorrentino doesn't have one. After ransacking the home, they fled with a wristwatch, pocketknife and wallet containing $30.

The suspects were later arrested and face criminal charges.

Sorrentino is a World War II Army Air Corps and Air Force veteran.

The money donated to Sorrentino was raised during a benefit poker run in June.
