A Guatemalan man accused of killing his girlfriend in Louisiana was arrested at the Mexican border in June, released and told to report back later.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Pedro Alberto Monterroso Navas was caught crossing the border in Texas on June 26 with his two children. The trio was released because Monterroso had no criminal history or gang affiliation.

Monterroso was arrested in Texas on Monday, a day after 24-year-old Heidi Monroy was found bludgeoned to death in the bathtub of her suburban New Orleans apartment.

Monroy and her three children were apprehended at the border in May and released.

More than 55,000 people traveling as families have been arrested at the border since October. An undisclosed number have been released with orders to report to immigration authorities.
