The parents of a Florence toddler who died after being left in a hot car have been arrested and charged with neglect.

Florence County sheriff's deputies say 57-year-old Joe Kennedy and 44-year-old Ruthene Kennedy were arrested Wednesday.

Sheriff's Maj. Mike Nunn said Thursday that the couple is accused of leaving 13-month-old Jeremiah Kennedy in a car seat in the vehicle with the windows closed for about 90 minutes. Nunn says that on May 25, the parents took the boy to a hospital. He died three days later.

Coroner Keith von Lutcken says the child had no visible injuries. He says an autopsy indicated the boy died from hyperthermia.

Nunn did not say why the boy had been left in the car.

It was not clear whether the Kennedys have attorneys.
