Rhode Island's Cliff Walk reopens 20 months after Sandy, letting tourists see famed mansions

The famous Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island, is open again — 20 months after it was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony was held Tuesday at the entrance to the 3.5-mile trail, which runs between the Atlantic Ocean and many of the city's most spectacular Gilded Age mansions.

It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year and is Rhode Island's most visited tourist attraction.

The storm washed away and damaged several sections of the walk, and most of it has been closed since the 2012 storm. A mile-long section has remained open.

Around $5 million was approved to repair the damage.

A continuous 2-mile section is now open. A small section in a less-traveled portion of the walk is expected to open next month.
