Authorities say a child was hurt in Detroit after being attacked by a dog and shot by a man who was trying to fire at the animal.

The Detroit Free Press, WWJ-AM and WXYZ-TV report the 7-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Sunday night. He was listed in temporary serious condition.

Police say the boy was shot in the buttocks on the city's west side by a neighbor who apparently was attempting help the child. A police spokesman says investigators want to talk to the man but it's unclear if he'll be charged with any crime.

The Detroit News reports that officers found the dog had died of an apparent gunshot wound.
