A Detroit-area man says he refused to stop and contact authorities after one of his passengers died during a drive to Michigan from Arizona in part because he feared being incarcerated if police investigated.

Ray Tomlinson also tells the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News he kept driving after his 31-year-old girlfriend died because he had his elderly mother in the van and wanted to get her home. He says he wanted to get the body to a morgue in Michigan.

No one has been charged and authorities are awaiting toxicology results from an autopsy performed on the body of the 31-year-old woman.

Police in the Detroit suburb of Warren didn't release names of those involved. They say the man and his 92-year-old mother spend their winters in Arizona.
